Latest Canterbury season kicks off Wednesday
From Staff Reports
MICHIGAN CITY — Festival Players Guild's 43rd Canterbury Summer Theatre season kicks off Wednesday, June 15, with Lowell Ganz and Gary Marshall's comedy-drama "Wrong Turn at Lungfish."
The play centers on a blind, bitter college professor and his encounter with a saucy young woman who volunteers to read to him in the hospital.
The season's first musical, "Romance Romance," runs June 22-July 2. Two one-act musicals take varied looks at romance seekers. That production is followed by "Beguiled Again: The Songs of Rodgers and Hart," which runs July 6-16 and offers nearly 50 selections from the Rodgers and Hart songbook.
"The Andrews Brothers," created and written by Roger Bean (last summer's "The Marvelous Wonderettes"), will have a three-week run July 20-Aug. 5. The show is a tribute to the music of World War II presented through mistaken identities and madcap adventures.
John Van Druten's comedy "Bell, Book and Candle" runs Aug. 10-13, with the season coming to a close Aug. 18-20 with N. Richard Nash's "Echoes," the story of two characters searching to determine the difference between illusion and reality.
The season's annual kickoff party is at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 12, at Mainstreet Theatre, 807 Franklin St., where all shows are performed. Reservations are required by today by calling 874-4269.
For each show, times are 2 p.m. Wednesday, 8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 5 and 8 p.m. Saturday. Season discount booklets containing six coupons are available for $75. By buying the booklet, a patron can save over individual ticket purchases. Coupons can be used for each show or in any combination. Individual tickets are $13.50 on weeknights and $15 on weekends. Group rates, half-price student rates (high-school age and younger) and senior discounts are available. Group dinner-theater and luncheon-theater packages are available in cooperation with Galveston Steakhouse, Lindos and the Heritage Room at Traditions (next to Mainstreet Theatre). Lunch packages start at $24 and include a theater ticket, lunch, tax and gratuity. Dinner packages start at $33.
